Lando Norris edged out fellow driver and title rival the Australian for the quickest lap in the dying seconds of the practice session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Norris, who seized the title advantage from Piastri by a single point after taking the win in Mexico City two weeks ago, beat the Australian by 0.023 seconds. Until that point, Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair throughout the hour before sprint qualifying due at 18:30 GMT. Max Verstappen, the only other driver in realistic title contention, lying 36 points Norris, was classified in 17th position as his Red Bull team followed a unique setup. His teammate Yuki Tsunoda was the sole competitor to crash, if briefly, when he rotated at corner four soon after starting. Tsunoda spun out over the curbs on exit before sliding over the gravel trap, and was lucky to get away with just a light touch of the barrier. The Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton also spun, at the final moments of the practice, spinning around through the high-speed Mergulho corner before the final corner on to the start-finish straight. The seven-time champion ended the session in P19, just behind teammate the Monegasque driver. Norris and Piastri were well clear of the remaining drivers, with the German's Sauber third fastest, over half a second off Piastri's best. Aston Martin's the Spanish driver was fourth fastest, with Sauber's Bortoleto fifth from Mercedes' Russell and Alpine's Pierre Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
